Title: GAMECON-1.5 IS ON!!!
Post by: macedwin on June 19, 2007, 04:03:43 pm
Yes, folks, the news you have all been waiting for... GAMECON-1.5 IS ON!!!

When - Friday (29 June 07) - Sunday (1 July 07). Next week!

Where - KL Convention Center; as part of Asia Game Zone 2007.

Time - 11am to 9pm (8pm on Sunday).

While I'm sure many gamers will be rejoicing with this announcement, here comes the tough part - in order to make this happen, we need 44 volunteers to man 18 games + 1 registration desk + 1 store, over 3 days.

Please volunteer your time to make this happen! As it is, we are fortunate that we do not have to find a sponsor for RM100K, and all we desperately need now are some arms & legs!

Here are the shifts:

Friday A: 11am - 4pm.

Friday B: 4pm - 9pm.

Saturday A: 11am - 4pm.

Saturday B: 4pm - 9pm.

Sunday A: 11am - 4pm.

Sunday B: 3pm - 8pm.

We will showcase the non-electronic gaming section of the convention:

A. Miniatures to PC games: Warhammer 40K. 2 tables; 1 volunteer per table. Warhammer 40K rookie tournament will run between open demo.

B. Euro to PC games: 1 volunter per game. Tournaments will run between open demos.

a. Settlers qualifiers.

b. Carcassonne qualifiers.

c. Blokus nationals.

d. Memoir'44 nationals.

C. PC sports counterpart: Subbuteo table soccer. 2 tables. 1 volunteer per table. Open demos only.

D. PC to euro games: 1 volunteer per game. Some games rotated. Open demos only.

a. World of Warcraft board + CCG.

b. Marvel Heroes + VS CCG.

c. Battlelore + Iliade.

d. Doom + Tide of Iron.

E. Party Games: 1 volunteer per game. Some games rotated. open demos only.

a. Villa Paletti + Hamsterrolle.

b. Jungle Speed + Halli Galli.

F. PC sci-fi/fantasy counterpart: 1 volunteer per game. Open demos only.

a. AT-43.

b. Confrontation.

c. Savage World.

d. Star Wars.

Please volunteer for more than 1 session/day if you can! We need all the help we can get.

Would be good if you could let me know how many volunteers and which day/shift you could do?

Logistics? Think we just gonna park there - its the KL convention center so lots of parking at special rate... let me check how much.

WoW!!! KLCC. Interesting venue. Not only I get see PC & Console gaming in action, I also get to see boardgames too, heaven.

FYI : Entry fees is RM5 per person (not too sure of volunteers)
Parking at KLConventionC for a full day is around RM30. You can park at KLCC walk through the tunnel for a little bit less. LRT there might be a much cheaper option.

my young padawan, i sense the force is strong within you... why you not volunteering to help the rebels? do not go to the dark side, and be a visitor roaming the halls... we need you... may the force be with you, and help you to choose wisely...

More thanks! Keep it coming. I figure we need at least 40 volunteers throughout the 3 days. Registration is now taken care of courtesy of PGi staff (x2), so our gamers can do what they do best - play games!

Err, sorry no room for train games lah... want to attract pc gamers not scare them away, ha2.

Savage Shinobi will be there... though I'll have to confirm with ya about Friday... need to re-arrange my schedule if possible.

Is the Convention Centre parking the same as the Shopping Mall?

Will tables and tablecovers be provided?

Kool!

Tables, tablecloths and chairs will be provided.

We are waiting for the organizers to revert on parking and passes. The convention center parking is different from the shopping center.

I've been as an exihibitor for trade shows in KLCC a few times and I ALWAYS have to pay parking fee. It would be great if we can have discounted parkings (kudos to the organizer) but I got a feeling you wont get any.

Layout map can be found here : http://webz.com.my/agz/pdf/agz_floorplan.pdf

So, where will the boardgames be located at?

The floorplan given to me has been changed slightly, but essentially its the whole area between the female toilet and stage. Booth-wise, its all the rows 86-88 & 95-104 on the right.

So you voluntering or not?

Dates are a bit close but I should be able to volunteer for 1 or 2 days. Sunday is out for me. Rest of the days is contingent upon me not travelling.

I've also had Lostboyz experience in paying exorbitant charges for parking at KL Convention Centre. It's more than RM30 for a whole day, even for exhibitors.

Yay! More volunteers! Hmm, we have more than 100 registered gamers but so far less than 10 volunteers? How to run convention?

Hmm, I'm still waiting for an answer from the organizers on the parking... If it's that expensive, then maybe we have to pool cars lor...

Btw, each post here = volunter for 1 slot... muahahahaha! Looks like someone has "voluntered" for the whole show man!

KLCC dun have standard fixed rate (like rm5) for exhibitor parking ar? Like that jialat la... Almost all convention center and event places (hotels) provide a fixed parking rate.

But in any case, LRT can get you easily into KLCC.

Dude, its a primarily a PC gaming convention. Boardgames is a side-attraction. The aim is to get the geeks to look the other way to the non-electronic side. You'll notice the selection of boardgames are either gateaway games,PC spin-offs or fantasy related games. TI3 might cut-it, but I think 18xx is way over the top.

So can you confirm your shifts? Will give you space for TI3 & 18xx.

I was thinking, since the event also happen to slot in boardgames in its menu, we don't have to cater exclusively to the videogame crowd. sure we need to make sure the games are cross-over friendly like macedwin's initial proposal. In addition to the centrepiece of catan and carcassonne as boardgaming cross-over to the xbox, we can have also railroad tycoon, world of warcraft, warcraft boardgame, coming soon starcraft boardgame etc. as cross-over from videogames to boardgames.

ticket to ride can also make an appearance considering that you can subscribe to play it online.

Games with miniatures like descent, ti3 can make an appearance as a 'display item only' to hook in the videogamer crowd. (don't ever teach this game as it will take a long long time!)

gateway games with easy rules like ticket to ride, carcassonne should be the demo-heavy standbys.

last of all, ensure continuity by making sure the interested are aware of the various avenues to pursue this hobby: e.g. give contacts for retailers like imagine games, york house, comics corner; gaming spots like mages cafe, boardgamecafe, toybox, myscififancafe, etc.

This is an opportunity to get the word to a larger audience and make sure we get sponsors for a real Gamecon!!!

The Savage Worlds adventure(s) I plan to run can be linked to videogames.... at least in theme.

Thanks to all who voluntered!

To all those who wouldn't - may your precious game boards warp, little meeples/other playing pieces go missing, and cards (laminated or otherwise) be the food of rats...

Due to almost zero resources on Friday shift A (11am - 4pm), we will not be operating. Hence, we will only operate from 4pm on Friday. Saturday/Sunday will be full days (11am - 9pm/8pm).

I will send out a final email brief (late) tonight, after we have completed the set-up this afternoon/evening.

Otherwise, see you there!

Thanks buddy but other than you and I, noone else is available tomorrow morning!!!

So see you tomorrow 3.00pm!

Here's the final briefing:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear all,

We finished our set-up around 9.00pm tonight and we are ready to roll!

Final details:

----------------

1. The Asia Game Zone 2007 convention runs from Friday to Sunday, 11.00am - 9.00pm (8.00pm on Sunday) BUT we will only be operating from 3.00pm on Friday due to serious shortage of manpower!!!

2. I have 25 confirmed volunteers over the 3 days, short of the 40 we were hoping for. As a result, we do not have enough for 1 volunteer = 1 game. You have therefore been assigned according to area, and we hope that you will be able to cope with 2-3 games under your charge (some of which you will learn for the first time!). I've grouped similar games within each section.

3. I have 40 exhibitor passes. In order to get into the hall free, you need one of these. Please call me when you arrive or get someone to ask for me at the left hand side of the entrance so I can hand you your pass.

4. The convention is on the ground floor, KL Convention Center. Parking is Rm3 for the 1st hour and Rm1 every subsequent 30 minutes. Entries after 7.00pm is Rm7 flat. To enter the car park, drive along the road between MNI twin tower and Mandarin Oriental, pass KL Convention Center and then turn left into Traders Hotel/Convention Center underground car park.

5. If you need to unload your goods, just before you go down into the underground car park, take the left road and go straight and let the guard know you are unloading at Bay #2. This gets you right into the Hall.

6. Heng, please inform Aychee as I don't have his email. Denise, please inform Loo.

7. Registration for Settlers qualifiers will be from Friday to 12.00noon Saturday. Qualifier will start at 12.00 noon.

8. Registration for Carcassonne qualifiers will be from Friday to 12.00noon Sunday. Qualifier will start at 12.00 noon. Carcassonne will be played using the 2-player version.

9. There will not be any other tournament.

10. Please be on time, stay beyond your shift if you can, and have fun!!!

Thanks for your assistance!

ew

Cheaper parkings are available further along Jln Ampang, near Wisma Selangor Dredging. Open space carpack there goes for rm3.50 per entry if before 7pm. After 8pm, they charge rm7 flat and on weekends (Fri-Sun), sometimes it goes as high as rm20 per entry (due to Zouk being just opposite the carpark).

But it's quite a long walk from there to the Convention Centre.

Contribute to better traffic and less jam in KL... take the LRT!!! [ohyeah]

TOP 3 REASONS TO TAKE LRT
1. It's fast and predictable - you can determine when you'll arrive
2. Much cheaper than parking anywhere in KLCC
3. Provides free nosebleed.

Today at GAMECON-1.5 saw the kick off of this year's Settlers qualifiers...

With the minimum 8 players, here were the results:

Group A

-----------

Winner: ME!!!

2nd: Rob.

DNQ: Jien Fei, Alan.

This semi-final had to be re-started as during the mid-game break, some innocent visitor re-set the game thinking it was available for free play!

Group B

----------

Winner: Vincent.

2nd: Henry (sudden death after tie-break).

DNQ: Foo, Paul.

Finals

-------

Winner: Rob.

2nd: Henry (sudden death after tie-break).

DNQ: Edwin, Vincent.

SO CONGRATULATIONS TO ROB AND HENRY AS THE FIRST TWO QUALIFIERS TO THE MALAYSIAN FINALS IN SEPTEMBER!

Thanks also to Ryan and Denise for helping to set-up, and to MRLONG for agreeing to play to make up the minimum qualifying numbers, which was later met by Foo's entry.

Congrats to the first 2 qualifiers - Rob and Henry. btw what happened to a certain Mr Long then? He went back to play his Catan on the Xbox? [:P]

I was thinking about the Qualifier for last year's finalists and cudn't help feel that something is not right there. Here are my thoughts.

1. It's an inspired move to allow the Winner and Runner-up of last year's Qualifiers to go straight to this year's Finals. [thumbsup]

2. However having the other 14 Finalists compete in one Qualifier of their own for 2 places doesn't seem so inspired. Here's the Why.

What are the others' perspectives on this?

Title: GAMECON-1.5 IS ON!!!

You are correct!

1. The special qualifier offers 14 finalist an additional chance to qualify for 4 seats.

2. So finalists can do two things. Play only in the qualifier if they are confident of being top 4; or play in all the qualifiers to be sure.

3. Denise signed up to play yesterday, but gave her seat to Foo.

It's an additional chance offering 4 seats.

best of all, I think that us mere mortals cannot enter their special qualifiers...
what more, they are fighting for 4 seats instead of 2 as per normal qualifiers.

- we still got some high quality converts ranging from pc/console gamers to a bunch of 40-50 year old ladies who were clearly addicted to blokus more than mah-jong!

- we managed to kick-off the settlers qualifiers.

- good test on our capability to do demos to large crowds (conclusion: we were struggling...)

once again, thanks to all who helped out in whatever way!

we are definitely in a better position now to plan for gamecon-2.

more multi-lingual volunteer please,
and full translation of rules into Bahasa,
I think I was the only volunteer conversing with the school kids in Bahasa.

I was demo-ing Blokus in BM too... but granted that blokus is easier to demo, I kept calling the Blokus pieces, pieces in BM. So i was like going: "semua orang mula di bucu, letakkan "pieces" kamu di bucu..."

some thoughts:
a. i kept looking for more blokus sets to demo as it was the easiest, and the crowd did not look like something that would appreciate settlers or carcassonne. but then again, denise did it with carcassonne, rhyen did it with settlers and jin fei actually did it with battlelore... *serious salutations*

b. if we know there were going to be lots of school kids, we might as well demo Hottest Race in the World as it's the cheapest game that the kids might buy.

c. the organisers seriously underpromoted the event. by the 3rd hour i think most gamers were itching to play their own games instead of demo-ing games to the odd visitor or two.

d. you can be shocked at who's good at blokus, a kid beat his dad and a mom beat the kids and the dad!

e. dexterity games are infinitely easier to demo.

f. after finishing a game demo, you start looking for other games to demo, but the other games' occupied and... you just lost your audience...

g. demo-ing carcassonne takes forever, you can occupy 4 players for an hour or two...

h. there were barely 6 booths in the hall, what were the organisers thinking!?!

i. thanks to jack208 for rescuing us from boredom by bringing 18Scan.

j. even though the hall was cold and sparse, i like to think that the boardgamers brought lots of excitement and laughter into the place by their enthusiastic zeal!

Thanks also to all who have posted their feedback! Good lessons for us to take to the real thing - GAMECON-2!

I must take my hat off to rhyen who I personally saw teaching dakwa clad schoolgirls Haselwurz & Barenklau and Settlers of Catan! You were awesome! Faham? FAHAMMMM!!!

Unfortunately I didn't get to witness ayheng teaching students how to letak their "pieces"!

However, nothing beats what I saw on Friday - 5 dakwa clad school girls who really couldn't speak English very well, reading & interpreting German as they played Arbos!

Every turn, players had to draw one card which told them what action to take. Although all the cards had illustrations of the actions required, it was still mighty hilarious to actually see these sporting girls reading their card out aloud in German, and then look at each other trying to figure out what the required action was!

Here's more feedback (and some rants) :-

1) Line barriers around the more valuable displays eg. Confrontation, AT-43, Warhammer 40k... earlier on saturday, there were a lot of school kids and there were not enough eyes to watch the other displays if you're busy demo-ing. Miniature games with nice terrain are good crowd pullers but need security otherwise things go missing.

2) I had difficulty explaining AT-43 and Confrontation in B.M as well....... don't Malaysians learn English in school anymore???

3) Palazzo Paletti was a brilliant crowd-puller. There were a whole bunch of people watching when I was going against Nick. Maybe someone to demo that full-time next Gamecon with Villa Paletti sets on sale nearby?

terima kasih!

yea, we were seriously short-handed. if the convention had pulled in 10,000 people we would be dead! just didn't have enough to do 1 per table.

we can now write to rackham to release a bahasa malaysia version...

errr, u and nick played villa paletti? duh! yea, last gamecon this was a full time crowd puller!

Need to rotate the games a bit more, Games like take 6 and Bonanza should hit the table more often since they have more popular game play value to newcomers (sorry Edwin, but H & B doesn't look like an game that will get much gametime to a newbie).
If you want people to try rarer games, can set up a few tables to demo them but don't let them stay on the table too long as it will be a waste of playing space (I recall a lot of empty tables to the right of the eurogame section). Just demo the things at certain interval and move on.

noted...

wish the organizers could tell us more accurately what demographic to expect!

as it is, the majority of the crowd were school kids - mostly school girls - in which case, ayheng is right - hottest race would have been better as it has been tried and tested in panglobal road shows in east coast!

You doubt our skill??? I'll have you know that we had the crowd holding their collective breaths as we masterfully removed pillar after pillar till Nick finally decided to acknowledge my mastery! [:P]

Of course, the pics have been carefully chosen and editorial comments have been inserted where necessary and unnecessary.

Now you can watch History Channel. [8-|]

If they are doing re-runs, try to catch:

Tiger Tank
T-34
The Big Red One
North Hollywood Shootout

Mail Call (weekly series) - funny & informative hosted by R. Lee Ermey (the drill sarge actor in Full Metal Jacket)

I've watched some History Channel stuff. Their documentaries are quite hit and miss. You get some good stuff, some junk and precious little way to filter out the junk.
