Coffee Bean To Launch Game Cafe on 12 April!
(from Imagine Games)

Dear Gamesters,

You are cordially invited to the launch of the Coffee Bean Game Cafe concept stores next Wednesday, 12 April, at Coffee Bean, 1Utama New Wing (Ground Floor), from 3.00pm.

The good editor of Cards & Boards already reported this in last week’s The Star, where we hope to see an influx of newbie gamesters discovering this great lifestyle activity over a cuppa!

For a start, three pilot CBTL outlets (1Utama New Wing, Bangsar Shopping Center & SS2) will carry a range of six designer games that customers can borrow:
- Card: tba.
- Award: Setters of Catan Travel Box (ie. check out this kool travel version!).
- Mensa: Transamerica.
- Kids: Gulo Gulo.
- Dice: Pickomino (Heck Meck Bratwurmack).
- 2 Player: Kahuna.

Next, gamesters at CBTL will get to practice and enter the Settlers of Catan International Championship Malaysian Qualifiers, where two winners will represent Malaysia in the finals at Spiel’06 at Essen, Germany, this October.

Finally, the KL Boardgame Meetup will be held at CBTL branches by rotation, to help promote the games and also convert more newbies!

We are now working out the logistics of introducing Warhammer 40K & Confrontation miniatures display showcases and demonstrations at CBTL stores. Is that kool or what?

PLEASE SPREAD THE JOY!!!

Ah-yes. I get your point now. The idea of Eurogames in both cafe chains never took off. Dun really know why, but my view is that the majority of the population still thinks

boardgames = roll n move =  for kids

Educating the public is an uphill task. Its easier for a camel to pass thru the eye of a needle.

actually it is all just a matter of timing and promotion.
If we can get the next gamecon up and running, we should also get the gaming venues (toybox, mage cafe, etc) to distribute flyers of their venue so thay people can go over to these places and game and also arrange meetup.

but most social gamers keep to their own crowd and buy games to entertain they own groups, the trick is probably to link up all these divergent group together. I think Jeff knows of at least 5 viable groups that don't intermix that much.

It is still a niche market, not for mass consumption.
Its for people who like to read rules, english rules for the matter.
Its for people who don't mind playing a game knowing that he might actually lose.
Its for people who is comfortable sitting with a group of stranger playing a boardgame a warming up to them.
Its for people who thinks paying more than RM100 a game is well worth the money.
Its not about promotions, its about teaching them young. Teaching them to read vigourously, any book. Teaching them that losing is a way of learning to win.

As you all know, Coffee Bean changed their minds at the last minute last year and we ended up doing the 6 weeks promo with Starbucks instead.

Here are some facts for your consumption:

1. It started as a 6 weeks promo in 6 stores and backed by the Settlers Qualifiers.

2. Starbucks did a media launch and rolled-out to 6 stores.

3. The promo was a success as can be seen by the number of participants in last year's qualifiers from Starbucks outlets - we had almost 92 unique participants, and the 2 qualifiers at Starbucks saw 16 players each. Compared to this year where the total unique participants fell less than 50, and most of the qualifiers were struggling to get the minimum 8 players.

4. Starbucks offered us to extend the promo to their entire 52 outlets, but we declined as there would have been too much costs involved, and we couldn't secure a sponsor.

5. The offer is still open.

Bottom line is that their franchise agreement will not allow them to be a games cafe, but if you want to promote the game at your cost, plus you cant sell off their stores, then the are happy to do it.

We have to change the perception of eurogaming. Most girls who play eurogames now are because their boyfriends / husbands play them and they're in it so they can spend more time with their boys. I have converted 6 or more single women from various nationalities to play boardgames who have gone home to their home countries to spread the love.

So ....if you guys know pretty single chicks who are not just an accesory to a guy, bring them over to OTK and wolfx will set them right. Soon lostboyz will add to his list:

"Its for people who wanna bridge the geek/chick divide and play games with pretty eligible girls"

and yet they are the only retailer of Paul McCrappy's latest CD, guess we really really must have some big publicity to get them to want to sell our introductory games.....

Eat some butter first to line your tummy.

Butter. heh. I remember one time when I was commissiong a project in Bintulu and this Ang Mo was representing the client side as a witness. That one night the commissioning was running late into the evening and he had a Guinness Stout drinking contest that day.

He started eating butter like nobody business and "disappear" from site for a few hours to enter this competition while we continued our commissioning. He came back drunk like hell and can smell the Guinness off him. We had one heck of a commissioning after that and lasted wee into the morning.

Butter? Didn't work I guess. Maybe its a myth. Maybe it only work when you consume moderately. I dunno, but I not convinced though.
