Despite the extremely small crowd at Asia Game Zone, we still mustered up more than 8 players for the 1st Settlers Qualifiers, which took place on Saturday, 30 June at the KL Convention Center.

Thanks to the few gamers who agreed to play in the event we got less than the minimum 8 players required. In the end, we got our 8, and could probably have fielded 12.

1st Round

-------------

In a friendly, but nevertheless tense 1st round, I probably surprised a lot of people by winning Group A quite comfortably (considering my 1st round exit last year at the Toybox qualifier!), while Rob took the second spot with the next highest points. An interesting note: This group had to re-start the game after playing for more than an hour when some innocent lady and her daughters re-set the game while the players were taking a "sound free" break! (ie. the noise from the speakers during the XFresh radio show was unbearable causing the players to take a "sound free" break).

Vincent won Group B but Henry had to go to sudden death to grab the second spot.

Finals

-------

Midway into the finals, it became quite apparent that Rob was running away with the game, leaving the others to plot how to get the next highest points.

In the end, it came down to sudden death, as Henry and I tied with the next highest score. As the play passed to Henry, he grabbed the opportunity and closed the game with an extra point, giving him the privilege of playing in the finals in September with Rob.

Congratulations to the first 2 qualifiers - Rob and Henry!

Many thanks to Ryan and Denise for helping out, and to Toybox and boardgamecafe.net for lending their sets.

On a hazy Sunday afternoon, 14 pre-registered gamers were waiting anxiously for the last two to turn up, so that the 2nd Qualifiers can kick-off.

They never turned up, so we kicked off with Ryan (last year's champion) and I happily filling the empty slots.

1st Round

--------------

Group A

1st: Foo; 2nd: Paul.

Group B

1st: Daniel; 2nd: Kai.

Group C

1st: Joshua; 2nd: Vincent.

Group D

1st Ryan; 2nd: Edwin.

Semi-Finals

---------------

The friendliness of the 1st round soon gave way to tension and cut-throat play in the semi-finals, as the evenly matched top 8 players truly slogged it out.

Although the 1st semis kicked-off first, it was the 2nd semis that was deicded more quickly and decisively as Joshua emerged the victor and Kai claiming his spot in the finals.

However, it was undoubtedly the 1st semis that provided all the drama. In an extremely close slug fest, with all the development cards purchased, Ryan showed his prowess again as he not only stepped up to claim the 10th VP, but also ended up with the enviable role of Kingmaker for who would claim 2nd spot. Both Paul and Foo were tied on 9 VPs, and I a breadth away with 8.

Not wanting to decide who to deal the fatal blow to on playing his "Monopoly" development card, he let the 2 contenders decide their own faith. Unfortunately, the gods ruled in favor of Paul, and thus the Kingmaker called for all "Wheat" resources, which effectively cut Foo's resources down to pitiance!

With the victor decided, the dice then passed to Paul, who with his hand intact after the last "Monopoly", surprised everyone by not being able to close the game! He revealed that he still needed to roll "4"or "8" to produce some much needed resources.

The dice then passed to Foo, who while needing to rebuild his resources, was in a dilemma as he also needed to roll the same "4" or "8", which would hand some much needed resources to Paul! In the end, he rolled neither and play passed to me. Benefitting from Paul's and Foo's earlier (mis)rolls, I traded the necessary resources with my ports to upgrade one settlement to a city, putting me on 9 VPs with the others.

Paul again failed to roll his "4" or "8", and was left pondering on lost his opportunities. With Foo now in a better position to close the game (after gaining some resources in the last round), tension ran high as everyone waited for his die roll to come to a stop. Alas, it was not to be the elusive "4" or "8"!

I now had to call upon my Vegas luck, to roll anything other than the "4" or "8"... though even I admit that for these numbers not to appear for the 6th time in a row is asking a lot!

But lady Vegas was indeed on my side, as not only did I not roll those numbers, I produced a wheat, which to everybody's total surprise, allowed me to build a new settlement - and grab the 10th VP!!! It was over. Just like that. Stolen from under the carpet.

Finals

-------

With Ryan having an auto seat into the national finals, and I am going to Essen anyway, we gave our seats to Paul and Foo, who were still in shock after their defeat.

By 6.45pm, the 2nd Qualifiers was done. Kai emerged as the winner, while Joshua grabbed the second spot.

Perhaps, Paul and Foo were not meant to play in the finals after all?

Congratulations to Kai and Joshua, and many thanks to the hosts, Mage Cafe, and to Toybox for lending their set.

See you in 2 weeks (Sunday) at Toybox, 12noon.

In the interest of having a public log on the catan qualifiers, I have a few questions.

1. Who have played in the qualifers so far? and how many qualifiers has each person entered?

2. Of the people who have qualified for this year's Finals, how many have not played in last year's qualifiers?

3. Of the people who have qualified for this year's Final, how many have played in last year's qualifiers (but did not qualify)?

4. How many of last years finalists have qualified through the normal qualifiers this year?
(I assume that jack208's list is the correct one: Bryan, Andyputra, Triona, Casteo, Ms Yong, Foo Bros, Denise, Ainul, Alan Woon, Justin, Nirmala, Sara Yasmin and Hayzan)

have you guys tried DELETING your posts? IF you have, you'll realise that it cannot be done. Some 'smart' sys-admin, put the dang timer too FAST. Soooooooo....... when you realise you mistake of double posting and wanna try to delete, the message pops-up and say "cannot cos you stooopid and the permission to delete has expired".

Sooooo my good friend rhyen, that comment was really NOT meant for you but more for the administrator of this forum. I was hoping you'll deflect it, but unfortunately you got shot instead.

So in retrospec, all my double posts was mistakes that I cannot do anything about. [:)]

hey dude, if u dunno how to delete a post, say you dunno how to delete, dun tell long story la. What cannot delete post? What timer? First time I heard forum software got timer for ppl to delete post one. Or mebbe this software too backwards, dun have those timer new canggih punya feature.

There's a forum called "Deleted Post" accessible only to Sys Adms which we can see which posts were deleted. I can see in that forum recently two person deleted their posts after posting. i) CE deleted his from Emoticons thread, and ii) ayheng deleted his from 18FL thread.

dey, dun give excuses la. rhyen's is genuine double-post ie. two posts identical which can actually happen sometimes when there's a lag in the user's internet connection (and also why I mostly ignore such double posting unless it's getting very frequent).

Yours are actually "single sentence post intentionally split into multiple posts". Wait, I know. You'll reply saying you actually wanted to post as single post but somehow this forum automatically split your sentences and post as multiple posts. [duh]

Ok, as rhyen said this is veering towards off-topic. Let's move back to the Catan Qualifiers topic. Next one is Toybox in about two weeks time.

You misunderstood. ALL those that posted here except Wolfx are Jedi Knights already. It just shows that :

1. They don't spam to become JK. They are natural born spammers.

Ziet will probably still be busy working at that hour, and Ching has tuition.

I will let them know about the 'closed' qualifiers - but I need the details as soon as possible. :)

AFAIK, the Closed qualifier is set for next Sat likely afternoon. Venue to be decided. Will post details here when that's confirmed.

Are Sat afternoon better in terms of timing for them?

Well, weekends in general are better lar.. whether its at night or in the afternoon :)

Weekdays, most are either busy with work or studies, and then if they aren't, they have to beat the suicidal rush hour traffic..

But dont make the plans around us hehe..

I'm very curious when the actual Finals are too.. since I'll be away in Sydney from the 20th - 30th..

Alrite.. two more qualifiers from the just concluded Catan Qualifier at OTK Cheras. A total of 8 players fought for the two qualifying places. We have another 4 more players who could have started one more table but since they came a little too late and starting another table might have implication time-wise, we decided to continue with the ongoing two tables of 8 qualifiers.

Table 1: Steven, Phuah, Kah May and Dominic
- results: Steven 10, Kah May 6

Table 2: Bi Lin, Jorge, Karan and Wai Yan
- results: Karan 10, Jorge 7

Finals: Steven, Kah May, Jorge and Karan
- results: Jorge 10, Karan 9

Congrats Jorge and Karan who shall join the 12 who have qualified for the Malaysian Catan Finals to determine who shall be the M'sian Rep for the Catan World Championship in Essen.

Next qualifier should be the 2006 Finalists Closed Qualifier to be held next week. The Sat after that (Sep 22) should be the M'sian Catan Finals. Venue/time to be announced later.

does the 'catan council' have a better reason than that? i hope next year this event will be more organized. i appreciate the efforts taken by the sponsor and the organizer despite the lack of funding. hats off to you guys who are doing this voluntarily (?) and for free. but seriously there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of promotion and organization.

good luck to the other finalists who can make it on the 29th.

(p/s: the sun-moon alignment on the 29th not good lah!! [:)] it's bad to play catan on that day!!)

I will be going to Cameron Highlands that weekend for some pampering and a Scrabble tournament and barbecue and steamboat feast.

Hey guys, greetings from Sydney.. :)

I know the organizers are trying their very best to fit as many people

as possible into the Finals - but a 100% attendance is probably next to

impossible without a fixed schedule/promotion planned out a few months

in advance (so that finalists can plan around it)..

Either way, I'm cool if I can't attend (still won't be around on the

29th), but if its on any of the weekends after that - COUNT ME IN. :)

P/S : I'm playing Catan even over here in Oz :)

here's the real reason for the (deliberately) poor organization... we really want to test the patience and tenacity of all the qualifiers. in the end, we'll be happy to fly, all expenses paid to essen, the qualifier who complaints the least and is therefore the most appreciative. why? because we need him/her to carry about 40 boxes to/from the halls to the car, then from the car to the hotel room, then from the room to our shipper when they show up after the fair to pick up the goods. ask ryan & kokkeong - the perfect examples of who we would like to see qualify. never complain, always appreciative, and ever willing to help. well done chaps!

further, this is a tournament. the organizer reserves the right to hold the qualifiers and finals at 3am in teluk intan if they so wish. it is up to qualifiers is they wish to take part. the tournament was not organized to cater for primma donnas. also, the proper channel for any complaint, dissatisfaction, grouses, etc is simply NOT TO TAKE PART and let some other more appreciative soul go to essen...

finally, in case some of you are unaware, we offered all game cafes, stores, etc an opportunity to host their own qualifier. everyone responded except wolf's game shop. despite that, we continuously sent text messages to keep them informed of qualifying rounds their gamers can attend. i don't think our duty as organizer extends to standing in front of their store entrance waiting for some of you to show up so we can inform you of the tournament?

on a final note, we look forward to welcoming all the qualifiers and last year's finalists to this year's finals. please be there before 12noon. we are also happy to have our first qualifiers from outside kl - melaka!

all the best and have fun!

I heard Wolf's Game Shop went bust after they moved out of Amcorp. I went to his place once after he shifted to Section 14. It was without a signboard so I took 1 hour to find his shop. It was poorly lit, smelled of stale smoke, and has no air-con. He also charges per player, per game, which I think is quite brutal.

It's sad. I honestly wished there was something i could do.
WGS was my first boardgaming shop.

Yeah, it took me some time to locate his shop at Sec 14.
The yucky smoke smell also came from the office below his.
There was air-con, only switch on when it gets really unbearable, i think.

His isnt the only shop that charges players- toybox does that well.
And he charges per game, ah what you didnt know is that those games belongs to players. Whatever was charged goes back to players who left their games there for other players to play!
My Acquire helped me make some- told him to use the $ to bring on more games. Now, that set is in Toybox - i dont make nothing. But i know lotsa ppl like to play it. [;)]

Many years back, WGS helped me get Werewolves of Millers Hollow while others just laments "cannot find this, cannot contact that, cannot do that, cannot bring this" - and they brought in Lupus in Tabula instead!
I guess i was the first to own WoMH (...I could be wrong, but who cares!!?..)

Just heard about the results.. CONGRATS to Triona and Karan for securing 1st and 2nd place respectively! :P

A little shameless self promo here - I taught both Karan and Khai how to play the game only a few months ago (who were both my colleagues).. I wish I could have joined them and have a little competitive fun too hehe..

And waaa.. why the flaming? I hope it wasn't directed at me either - cause I'm pretty sure I didn't complain much - just happenstance that I made plans on that day already..

And gee.. about WGS - I had NO IDEA. So what's Wolf doing now? and where have his players and groupies gone to? shit man - I used to MTG at his place quite frequently and I haven't seen him in ages.. guess I'd better give him a call or something.. sighh..

Some things are planned for the next couple of months, I'll try and keep those interested informed as long as it doesn't break any forum rules.

And, lets keep the flaming down please...... its hot enuff already round here ain't it??

The finals started at 12noon sharp at MySciFiFan OUTPOST with the 8 seeded players drawn into 4 groups:

Group A: Ryan (S), Dennis (S), Hafyzan, FT Zeit.

Group B: Ainul (S), Vincent (S), Karan, Triona.

Group C: Andyputra (S), Khai (S), Tracy, Bryan.

Group D: Jorge (S), Sujantha (S), Amran, FT Ching.

By 200pm, the 1st round was over, with only 3 seeded players surviving - Ryan, Dennis and Jorge!

Light refreshments were served for those who were not fasting.

The semi-finals started at 2.00pm:

Group A: Ryan (W), FT Ching (W), Triona, Dennis.

Group B: Bryan (W), Karan (W), Tracy, Jorge.

By 345pm, the finalists were decided, with only one match requiring a tie-breaker - where Triona narrowly beat Dennis to the extra point AFTER turns had passed one whole round!

Group A:

----------

1. Ryan (10).

2. Triona (9+1).

3. Dennis (9).

4.FT Ching (8).

Group B:

----------

1. Karan (10).

2. Bryan (9).

3. Jorge (8).

4.Tracy (6).

While all the Settlers action was happening, others (inclujding those who came to lend support) ended up playing a game or two themselves! There were people playing *Settlers* (why???), Puerto Rico, Gheos, etc, so the whole atmosphere was great!

After a short “multi-purpose” break, the 4 finalists got down to business. So far, it has been a fairly friendly and casual atmosphere. By 530pm, the winners were finally decided in a knife-like atmosphere, where the stakes were high!

Final Standing

-----------------

Winner: Triona.

2nd: Karan.

3rd: Ryan.

4th: Bryan.

Congratulations to Triona, who will represent Malaysia in two weeks at the International Finals, and hope to improve on last year’s 33rd/34th placing.

The 2nd seat is offered to Karan, Ryan & Bryan in that order, though they will have to find their own sponsor for the airfare.

Thanks to all those who participated, those who hosted qualifiers and those who lent their sets! See you next year!

Meanwhile, AirCherasXXX arrived "later than usual", and started a game of Caylus... I also saw Taj Mahal in the flight menu, but did not see 18XXX...

Untrue statement! I certainly did not flame. Dude, I started playing SoC, PR, and organized weekly TI3 & AH sessions there. Made lots of friends, some of whom have represented/will represent Malaysia to Japan, Germany etc in various games. The proprietor is someone I've known from waaaaaay back. So no flaming here.

After breaking fast, five of us did one round of Puerto Rico where many shed blood (mainly thru their noses) while shipping corn and coffee. It was serious blood, hehehe.....

Then we've the most riotous and unproductive game of Caylus (the same five) where wolfx finally won his first game of Caylus (gratz). I think he scored like 500+ points (or least it felt that way during the game).

And finally while aanemesis braved the traffic jam (ard 1030pm), the rest of us spent our time more productively at the pool hall and found out that aycee doesn't have crooked limbs. Not sure about aanemesis though. [:P]

Try the German Embassy .They usually lend great support to events promoting their Motherland.Other considerations include the German Expatriate Group(check out The Expatriate mag.).There's a friendly German Restaurantaur  (EL CERDO,Cangkat Bukit Bintang) who might be keen to make it BIG!Who knows?Tak cuba, tak tahu...

1. ja! thanks for tips! embassy unfortunately only good for anything that doesn't involve money ;-) but no worries, we will be putting together a board games = german culture thingy so we are looking forward to marketing this after essen.

2. aiyah, that was wolfx playing gheos and caylus??? wanted to meet him and ask him about mario in jakarta! oddly, i've never met mario, but i know his partner very well - kilyn. hello anyway!

3. hey triona, dun worry about travelling alone! afterall, you're only going to arrive in dubai at 3am... and then try to stay awake so you dun miss your connecting flight at 7am to dusseldorf! who knows, you might even meet a oil tycoon ala rich sheik and never make it to essen! anyway, if you're really worried, let me know... i'll let the airline know that a child by the name of triona will be travelling alone, and they'll take good care of you - hehe! actually, thats not a bad idea as you get free games, crayons, etc, and even get your meals before the adults!

once you reach essen, you will be with us (*gang of malaysian-singaporean-indonesian-usa gamers + japanese media people) who hook up every year. it will be so much fun!

4. finally, if anyone wants to go on this great euro gaming pilgrimage, the going rate is only RM4,200!! airfare + accomodation for 5 nights w breakfast + entrance to spiel. if you can convince triona to share* the room you will bring that cost down to RM3,600!!!

i will bring you to "hall 6" on day 1, and i guess the rest will be history (hehe... ).

seriously, u will be meeting so many people there you wont miss anyone from home - trust me!

many of the gamers either play more games all night long at their hotels after the fair hours, or party (usually the hall 6 people), so either way, you wont be lonely.

be happy to hook you up with:

- scottish guys (fragor brothers).

- german guys (organizers of the catan finals, mac gerts who designed imperial, etc).

- italian guys (claudio from tenki games).

- british guys (martin wallace!).

- american guys (greg, rick and the whole gang who write for various games portals).

- french girls (maria from rackham).

- german girls (katrin from amigospiele, alexandra from zoch, etc).

- dutch guys (ki-lynn, who is mario's partner).

- indonesian guys (mario!).

- singapore guys (damien from pi).

Granted, RM4,000-5,000 can buy a lot of games... but I wonder why many people compare going to Essen with that fact that they could buy more games if they didn't go?

Going to Essen is in essence, a vacation. No different from going to Bali, HK or some other "holiday" destination. You get to enjoy the food (original German sausages & beer), the spectacular scenary (a drive along the Rhine-Ruhr is hard to beat), stay in quaint medieval villages (like the ever so charming Hiedelberg or Mainz), visit the usual "tourist" landmarks (in this case, Messe Essen, home of Spiel), and best of all, take home some souvenirs (like great games from EUR5 and not-for-sale promo items)...

Equating Essen with the number of games you could otherwise buy is like equating a trip to London with how many keychains (or other souvenir) you could buy instead.

Of course, there's no sense in going to Essen just to buy cheap games. Of course, its cheaper to buy the games online or from the friendly folks in KL. But that's hardly the point isn't it? Just as there is no sense going all the way to Switzerland to buy fine chocolates, as you could buy it right here in KL.

Going to Essen to attend Spiel is a vacation. You don't go all the way there (and spend all the money) to buy games for less!!! And let me tell you, after 2 years, its quite a vacation!

In 2005, we arrived in Amsterdam on a chilly October morning. Visited the wonderful Van Gogh and Rembrant museums, did the "waterway" tour, and drove out to the country visit the windmills & cottege industries. Then we did Essen.

In 2006, we arrived in Frankfurt, drove to Hiedelburg, embraced the stunning sight of the Hiedelburg castle from atop the Philosopher's Walk, and paid homage to the only city that was spared the allied bombings. Then we did Essen. After Essen, we strolled the cobblestone lanes in Mainz, an incredibly charming medieval town.

This year, we will arrive in Zurich, drive down to Lugano, hit the fashion capital of the world in Milan, spare a moment of silence at the Bridge too Far in Arnhem before hitting Essen. Then we hop off to Paris for coffee and hop to London to catch a musical (and Games Workshop HQ in Nottingham).

Oh, and Essen? A beautiful quaint town, though most of the days were spent in games heaven! Spiel is not about the games. Its about the people and industry behind it. Real friends from Italy, Czech, France, Germany, England, US, Australia, etc... people who we still stay in touch with long after the games...

So to the uninitiated, he/she may think he/she will not miss 4 days of gaming, after all, you can do that at Mage or Toybox at a fraction of the cost.

The saddest thing in the world is when you miss something and don't even know it... Well, its not just 4 days of gaming... its a lifetime of education, discovery, and awareness - packed into one trip to Essen (and stopping at transit points before/after).

Going to Essen is not "gaming or buying cheap games". It is "travelling, and learning all the invaluable lessons in life that only travelling can teach you.

For RM4,000-5,000? For a traveller, that's really cheap!

Two weeks to go. You can still make it. RM4,000-5,000 gets you from KLIA to Dusseldorf, a car for a week to drive to Arnhem/Amsterdam if you wish, charming villages in Germany/Belgium and Spiel'07 at Essen.

See you there!

The above I believe is not going to be a rm4k-5k vacation, right? So we are comparing apples with oranges.

The 4k-5k package merely drops you into Essen, with a place to stay (note: expensive food unless you eat like a mice) and four days of playing (err sampling) all those hyped-up new Essen releases. If we looked at 2006 releases, I dun think there are many new games I'm looking forward to play..... I've always view Essen as a trade-show as opposed to a gamers convention. That's just my own opinion though.

GenCon (whether it's US or Oz) remains a different proposition. There you get to play your favorite games (whatever that may be) - and some new ones - and get to spar with strong players. I'm not sure how GenConOz is set up to be but if the Brisbane project is on, you can bet I'll pop in to take a lookie.

The others are Origins (USA) and BGG.Con which are geared to even more boardgaming experience as opposed to publishers tooting new releases. Plus you 'll see many Boardgamegeeks there. GenCon, Origins and BGG.Con all have organized gaming schedule.

For competitive gamers, look no further than WBC (World Boardgaming Championship) where you get nothing but competition competition competition..... The WBC committee answers to boardgamers only, and not publishers/dealers.

You want to know how good you are in Puerto Rico, Caylus, 18xx, Acquire, ASL, Diplomacy, Dune, Age of Steam, Power Grid, Ticket to Ride etc.. this is THE place to be. No more camping at your local gaming store and playing in your own little cliques and ganging up to "beat" other newcomers or non-local players at Puerto Rico or Caylus... throw yourself right into the PIT and find out if you are a Shark or just shark food. [:P]

And for 18xx fans, the Chattanooga event usu. in Jan/Feb - hosted by Mark Derrick, designer of 18AL/18GA - is also one to look fwd to where you get to play all RAIL games esp 18xx series. This is one "vacation" I'm looking forward to go.. especially if we can get the Msian 18xx contingent to tag along! Doing funky train maneuvers with incompetent engineers and feeling the hotsun getting closer to you..... hmm... but first, we need to play more 18xx games here!!!

At the end, ask ourselves - are we going there to shop or are we going there to play?  That'll tell u which CON is best for you. Plus since most of the above are held in the US - where flight tickets KUL-US tends to be much cheaper than KUL-Berlin, you can do any of the US CONs for much lesser than rm4k.

**warning! flame coming**

bloody jedi council missed the whole point!!!

"At the end, ask ourselves - are we going there to shop or are we going there to play?"... NEITHER!!! read the post properly lah! it says going to essen is a vacation!!!

here's how the numbers add-up:

- kul to zurich (emirates or ethiad) = rm3,050/return from different point.

- zurich to lugano (car rental) = rm120 x 2 days = rm240.

- 1 night lugano + 1 night milan = rm240 x 2 nights = rm480.

- bergamo (near milan) to weeze (ryan air) = rm80 (budget airline ticket cost EUR1 + taxes).

- weeze to arnhem (car rental) = rm120 x 2 days = rm240.

- 1 night arnhem/nijmigen = rm240 x 1 night = rm240.

- arnhem to essen (drive 30 minutes).

- essen 4 nights = rm230 x 4 nights = rm920.

- essen to dusseldorf (drive 30 minutes) - home.

so, for rm4,000, you can do essen comfortably with air tickets + accommodation. for rm5,250, you can do lugano, milan, arnhem and essen, including budget air travel and car rental in-between! if you share the room, you save rm820!!! which is then enough to get you to london/paris via ryan air (ours cost eur 1!) and stay a night before flying back to kl!!!

food excluded of course as each of us have different needs... if you take enough cup noodles, cup porridge and milo, you wont have to spend anything as all hotels come with buffet breakfast, which you gobble up enough to skip lunch, or have just a sandwich made during breakfast!

so, rm4,000-5,000 for a vacation in europe to take in the sights, history, architecture, art and culture is really very cheap! as a bonus, you get to meet the top game designers, and take home some cheap games as souvenirs!

but, if your brain is still stuck on a one-track journey, then OF COURSE its bloody expensive to go all the way to essen or usa or even oz just to play games!!! and if you are on that track, then justifying going to conventions in usa and oz as "more worthwhile" than essen is just plain... [better not say lah, sigh!]

and oh, jedi council thinks Essen is mainly for trade?? since jedi council has not been there, then i think your young padawan is right since he has been there 2 years running... IT IS A VISITORS FAIR!!! 150,000+ GAMERS. euro games, rpgs, miniatures, live action rpg, cosplay, ccgs, etc. the trade fair is in nuremberg (together with toys) every year in february. duh!

and finally, of course you could plan a vacation to usa or ozland, on the same basis as essen... my 2 sens worth though - they both pale in comparison as vacation destinations to europe.

Dear All,

Please come to Mage Cafe this Saturday (27 October) to join me in congratulating Triona for placing Malaysia 4th in the Catan world after last week's finals in Essen!

Not only did she do Malaysia proud, she was the 1st ever female in the grand finals!

See you all at Mage Cafe from 2-3pm and hear all about how she "footsied" her way into the top 4!

For the Carcassonne tournament, Shaun delivered the same results as last year - 2 wins, 4 losses - this time beating Ireland and Hungary, in a tough 20 player finals, but ended up 2 positions better than last year.

MALAYSIA BOLEH!

Cursory report from Mage.

No saucy report from triona, just mention of footsie...
anyway, Settler of Catans is moving to USA next year in Indianapolis, and the entry fee has been jacked up to U$1,000.00
Triona gets an automatic berth, so we are fighting for 1 spot next year.

Good luck

Okay, now that we know the details about next year's predicament/situation.

Would like to ask everyone for ideas to submit in a proposal to edwin regarding next year's championship(s), of which they should be 3:

Malaysian qualifiers for the World Championship
Asia Pacific Championship
World Championship

Gentlemen and Finalists,
Throw your hats into the ring.

Those two are still in the works, but we can still plan ahead just in case those two events do materialize.
We do have two spots, just one has already been handed to Triona on a gold platter, courtesy of edwin.

since there is no official announcement yet from mayfair/kosmos, i can only tell you what the head honcho of mayfair told me... so its still unofficial (as i know there are lots of resentment from the european nations).

proposed:

1. settlers world tournament only held once in 2 years.

2. venue rotates between usa and essen.

3. 2008 planned for indiannapolis, usa; so next one at essen will be 2010.

4. entry fee per participant = usd1,000! includes accommodation and prize money (no amount announced yet).

5. i proposed an asian tournament during the in-between years (2009, 2011, etc).

6. i have got strong support from organizer of australian expo (phil), the japanese and taiwanese. i have also got no objections from mayfair so long as we don't call it "world".

7. in view of triona placed 4th, i have offered her an auto place in 2008 finals.

8. we still have to find sponsors though.

Haiyah, I think there's so much more work to be done regarding the new Asian Catan Championships.

What I'm interested now is in the Carcassonne championships next year at Essen. What are the official rules and such. I propose that we start honing our skills on this wonderful game (no? aanemesis) in order to prepare for next year. I think this game when played one-on-one is truly strategic and less luck based than settlers. But I think if chess timers are used then I'll definately not do so well.

I oso requested the official Carc rules a few posts ago too. In order for us to prepare for this, we require the official rules and notification of the expansions early. Is there an English website where these are posted? If not then a German website will do for now. We can babelfish it.

Yup certainly less afflicted with luck than aanemesis fave Catan game. But dun think you need to worry too much about the chess timers.

If they are following the chess timing convention, then you'll get like say 1 hr for total game and not 2 min per move type of limits. Even if you play slow, as long as you can finish your game within your 1 hr (and say opponent finish theirs in 20 min), you can still win if you played better.

Chess timers do provide added urgency to Carc. Sometimes, chess timers are used in ASL tournaments as well.

I hope the chess timers are the electronic silent type which do not go tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

I hope the chess timers are the electronic silent type which do not go tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock, tick, tock, tick tock,

tick, tock, tick tock...
Try this brand: Samtimer
you can even program the timer itself.

no local distributor here, but you can order online from him.
He will be here in Malaysia at the end of November for the Causeway Scrabble Challenge (playing for the International team).
You can try and place the order with him and send him the money and I will pick up the goods for you in Johor Bahru when I see him.

1. i have the official rules lah... how to post?

2. base set only, no expansions.

3. each player given 15 minutes. if you run out of time, you automatically lose.

4. once you place your tile, you can immediately draw another while your opponent is figuring out what to do.

5. a 2-tile castle scores 4 points (instead of 2). if with shield, then 6-8 points.

Oh no!!! Really sorry to hear about the theft of your prizes......... hope they find the culprit, coz you really deserved it! I assume you've made an official complaint as well as the letter to the newspaper?

Hopefully someone with a bit of muscle and identity on Boardgamegeek will post the news there, so that the BGG members can keep an eye out for these items in case the jerk tries to sell them on EBay .

Keep smiling doll [:D]

according to triona, she appointed pos malaysia to clear customs for her package which got held up by the men-in-blue.

when she finally picked up the package, she found that the boxes had been opened by customs for inspection, and resealed.

my view is that she has to file a complaint with pos malaysia, since they were her appointed agents, and ask them to get a confirmation from customs if the damage + missing items were noted when customs opened the package.

if pos malaysia and customs can confirm this, then we can inform germany.

while such a confirmation will be difficult to get, especially from customs, the first step at this stage is to file an official complaint against pos malaysia.

all the best!

I see. Pos Malaysia cleared it. This is most silly then since you will have to pay them a fee for clearing it even if you found things inside missing/damaged especially if it happened during the checking.

Usually when my stuff get stuck at Kastams, i drive there personally to get it. Kena twice liow....but at least they open it in front of you and you eventually get it in your hands. Anyway our Kastams and pos ppl are corrupted inefficient ppl la. Dunno how many times they stop by yoour house, horn once or twice sometimes never ring door bell then drive off with a note asking you to come get it from their post office. Grrrr! Why can't they wait few seconds for you to get to the front door? !@*&!(@*&!(&@!@!@!*(&@!!!!*!*(
