Title: BGC Boardgame Retreat 2010
Post by: jack208 on July 11, 2010, 01:22:10 am
IT's time for some of us to put our heads together to plan what games will be hitting the tables in next week's retreat. :)

Details of the retreat here
http://blog.boardgamecafe.net/2010/07/01/boardgame-retreat-2010-2/

Let's start discussing here on the gaming format, timing and games to bring to the table. Let's keep this thread to discussing the main event ie 9am-6pm. Those who are staying overnight can also talk about what games will hit the table in the After8 session.

A tentative schedule
8:30 - 9:00 Registration
9:00 - 9:30 Appetizer Game (waiyan will arrange)
9:30 - 10:30 Light 1-hr game
10:30 - 12:30 2-hr game
12:30-1:30 LUNCH
1::30 - 3:00 1.5-hr game
3:00 - 5:30 2.5-hr game
5:30 - 6:00 Closing
----------------
6:00 - 8:00 Dinner
8:00 After8 Gaming

For the afternoon session, I'm thinking of doing a longer 2.5 hr game as the last game... this will give us two meatier games in the afternoon (for 4 hrs) or we could do two 2-hr games. Which option sounds better?
- One 1.5h + one 2.5h (as above)
- Two 2h
- One 1h, two 1.5h

for the After8 session, it's likely we are having 2 tables so let's decide the games to bring. I'll be bringing the following:
- DUNE
- 1856

Any other requests for my games? What are the others bringing? Someone bringing Starcraft with Brood War? [:P]

Let me know if there is any request for the following:
- Sceptre of Zavandor [6-er]
- Arkham Horror [8-er max]

Afraid won't be offering TI3. Game is already long enough that if there are newbies, rules explanation will take more than half an hour. Time is preciousssss at the retreat. [;)]

P.S. These are all for After8 gaming.

Sceptre can be a main session game, no? How long does Sceptre play for say 4p? If under 2h, can include as part of main game ma. But yes bring it along regardless, haven't done that for a long time.

does Arkham play well for 4er?

The 1.5 + 2.5hr option sounds good enough as it opens up the possibility for longer games like Tikal.

After 8 gaming I'm good for anything although I need to cater for my wife as well. I'll bring Wits and Wagers and Bang! for the light intermission.

Your wife ar, hengy? Easy la... just do BSG with Pegasus Exp!!! [ohyeah]

As for Tikal, we actually did that in the 2006 Retreat under the 2-hrs group. It can be done in 2-hrs provided we use the timer to hurry ppl along. But this time we shud have a lot more lesser-known games to bring to the table. AA has already mentioned Scepter (waiting for him to revert on game length). Will try to put up a tentative schd of games.

BGG says Scepter [got spelling wrong] plays in 90 minutes. Think it takes longer, but been a while. We can try for 4er main game if you like. You'll note however, latest post on game entry forum in BGG is titled "Speedier Variant"...

Arkham for 4er is not bad as well. But I don't think it can be done in 2 hours.

Been playing claustrophobia a lot with my wife lately. Pretty good 2 player game (3p possible for one of the scenarios). Plays in under an hour. Easy to explain rules and fast setup time. Why not bring along Claus as a filler game while waiting for the other tables to finish? :) It's something Hengy can play with his wife also. Rated wife friendly.

okie.. pls include Scepter in your packing list. May consider it for one of the 2hr slot. For Arkham, it's not so much for the main session.. more for After8 though Hiew has offered to lend me his Planet Steam which is very the tempting... but someone got to read the rules first and also not sure if we can fit it on any table??

heng, which of allen's games with you?

Breaking news.....
While the Humans were naturally ecstatic with joy on reaching what they first thought to be Terra, they found out to their dismay later they were misled by the questionable Helena Ken, and they have only reached Kobol. [brickwall]

To add to their misery, when they awoke this morning they found themselves back at Day Zero of the Cylon Massacre. Seems like someone had messed with their minds and time-warped them back to Day Zero!! Now they have to do the jumps to Kobol all over again!!

[arghh]

However this time, we'll urge them to question the loyalty of Helena the Ken.... Pictured below is a well-known Cylon leader who (hmm) also likes to wear "hats". Notice the similarity?

[:-*] Psst.. we suggest you execute Helena the next time you see her!! Also if you see her again without hats, she probably has intel on this page and is now chucking away her hat.. but you can't trick us, you Cylon Leader!! [pokeeye]

Don't miss the climatic rematch this Friday... ONLY AT OTK!

Unfortunately Helena Ken will most probably be dating a hot cylon chick this Friday and will not be joining the upcoming session.

I hope the next admiral will do as splendid a job that I did.

So say we all. :P

Post by: ayheng on July 28, 2010, 03:50:02 pm

Welcome to BGC Boardgame Retreat! This is

the third boardgame retreat I’ve been to and I’m unique in being the

only one attending all three retreats held in recent years. But enough

about me, on to the report! I’m sure jack208 will post something later

so I’m just going to make this report one that’s seen from my

perspective:

Nice signs in Genting GICC directing gamers to the correct room.

Here’s Game Zero in progress with me and li li playing Three-of-a-Crime with…

arm and aanemesis! arm’s a thai and his name is too long to spell so

i’ll just call him by the name we all used in the retreat. This is a

fantastic game that’s really short and quick. Basically it’s deduction

with a speed element that’s easily described as mastermind-lite.

lester, cristiano, leeching and teddy are doing Rat-a-tat-Cat. Our Three-of-a-Crime game went into overtime so did not manage to find out what the other games played like.

Sleeping Queens game going on here with wolfx, wonglc, swee ee, rob

and waiyan. Not sure what is going on here as people kept calling out

‘you can’t count!’ amidst laughter. head scratch.

games on display, a taste of things to come.

Game Zero in progress. This one is called Manila. Teddy makes a grab for the goods!

The biggest con of them all, wolfx, demonstrating the art of ‘risk-taking’ in Manila.

me, rob, cristiano and wonglc facing terrible disasters In the Year of the Dragon. We seem to have cristiano at a disadvantage as we had played this game before sometime or another.

The ladies swee ee and li li enjoying Stone Age. The feedback afterwards were positive!

‘He did it!’ lester tries to put the blame on arm… kekeke

Game Two in progress… wolfx says no comment when asked how he plans to win the game of Endeavor. leeching and cristiano seems to be questioning wolfx’s lack of strategy.

Giants being played here.

Homesteaders. This game is serious, I took the Rail

Yard but still end up beaten by everyone else. Good job! Btw there are

no records being broken in this game. All players pass the IMF test (all

 loans repaid).

Miniatures from the Giants game. Really high quality components, eye-catching.

A game of Taluva was played by the Endeavor crew as they await the slow number-crunchers at the other tables.

Game Three: swee ee shows aanemesis how to ‘CHOP!’ in a game of Wasabi. Disclaimer: swee ee won the game while aanemesis lost horribly like a fly being crushed by an elephant!

Alhambra. Man these guys are serious.

Priests of Ra. errr… jack208, so how do we play the game???

The score after three rounds of gaming.

Rob emerges victorious and claims his prize!

Teddy emerges… last and gets a consolation prize!

wolfx: Drat! I should have lost all my games and claim a prize too!

Another shot of all the games brought to the retreat.

And us behind the games. See you guys next year!…

Oh wait, all of us stayed back and overnight at Genting. So after

dinner at the First World Plaza, we moved on to…. gaming after 8.

Rooting out cylons in Battlestar Galactica with the new Pegasus board.

Building industries in err.. the Age of Industry (game courtesy of blownfreaks)

A newbie game of Le Harve. In the end, the day

proved too tiring and the gamers retired after playing a few games. Not

pictured here is the crack game of Race for the Galaxy played by veterans rob, aanemesis, wolfx and myself.

Obligatory shot of the city in the clouds – Genting.

Alright, see you guys next year! (or next con, or the keretapi-con, whichever comes first)
