Title: Friday the 14th (Dec 2007)
Post by: shrapnel on December 04, 2007, 03:24:28 am

Awright! I admit it!! I'm in cahoots with C Mun organizing the Ladies Night thingy.
The venue is not in OTK. There are plenty of reasons for this (as I will tease tell you more later).

Since there'll be FHMs around, so there will be a simple nursing room where they can nurse.

I thot of asking wolfx to be in charge but i'm not too sure... need to ask C Mun about this. She's a nurse too, right?
(What!? AAnemesis? You want to be in charge too? Ok, who else?)

Unfortunately for c_mun, i will be on company trip on the 14th and cannot grace her and her nurses with my presence. [:(]

Oh well....hope the FHMs have fun then. And shrapnel you purposely making this topic cryptic aren't you?

Aisay! The ASH will be sorely disappointed with the absence of Wolfx.  [:'(] The FHM even more...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But the show [~] must go on!

there will be a nursing room.

it will be Christmas themed (just a lil bit.., not too much).

SCIENTIST
n.    A person having expert knowledge of one or more sciences, especially a natural or physical science.

ARTIST
n.    A person who produces works in any of the arts that are primarily subject to aesthetic criteria.

When it comes to the special and yet very familiar aroma, the stimulant that heightens your senses and the rich and exquisite taste of coffee.., it is very hard to find someone who devote himself to the art and science of the beans and the brew.
One such person is Kopikid, a personal friend of mine. He will make you your coffee. You'll probably want more... so you just have to tell him. Then again, he probably know that already...

Err.... Actually I'm leaving for Penang today for a business trip and will only be back Friday late afternoon. So, unfortunately, I have already packed my games that I thought suitable for the meet-up eg. Busen Memo & Wench. hehehe
Ok, ok. I packed Blue Moon City (Someone requested to play, so I comply), Ingenious (game by Reiner Knizia) & Notre Dame (was in my car and too lazy to take it out. Unpunched and rules unread, if someone knows the rules, we can try this out)

We arrived a bit late at 8pm, but as it turned out, things haven't really started. My 2 boys were introduced to Werewolf by.... Wolf! They always retell the "stories" [2 games played] excitedly. Next up they were introduced to Blokus & O Zoo Le Mio. All were new games to them, which achieved one of my objectives i.e. to introduce them to other games. Last game of the night for them was Puerto Rico, an old favourite. My thanks to the gamemasters including Wolf, jack208 and Wai Yan.

I got to learn Notre Dame, which is posted separately in another thread.

Brought the 13yo and 10yo. Both play PR, Caylus, AoS & Sceptre of Zavandor. Have yet to play TI3 as I lack the time. Yes, I wanted them to play less PS2, and meet more BG people for the social interaction and brain tickling.

Oh.. they know how to play a lot of games! They even say one of their faves is some "memory" game... oops. Wait, they said I'm not suppose to tell their father this. [:P]

Joking aside, they know P.Rico well (relatively speaking) - I was observing that game - and they picked up O Zoo Le Mio pretty fast though we only did one year (ie one round).

Event Report of Friday the 14th.

Hobby Canteen event came about when good friends- C_mun and shrapnel, shared the idea of spreading the gospel of boardgaming.., even to their very own friends. Also, what sparked the idea was the lamentation of the lack of ASH babes. And the FHMs.

They got hold of Eric (an old friend of many years) - he has got the venue.

And Kopikid, he brews coffee passionately.

Time to start: 700pm (but many were expected to be late due to Friday and all…)

FHMs usually mean there will definitely be kids. Heck, there will be families. Hence, few things were set up:

1                    Nursing room

2                    Kids Room

3                    Food was catered (since they realized that moms will rush home to immediately pick up kids to Hobby Canteen with nothing in their tummy).

Below are their open, honest reports. Sources also include the feedback forms.

The Good.

The Bad.

The Ugly.

Objectives met:

Finally, Hobby Canteen is happy to have cooked up such an event within 2 weeks. On the other hand, they humbly apologize should there be any sort of disappointments caused.

There’s an almost unimaginably huge room for improvement. Tolong help share ideas, ya!

(Pics coming soon!)

some initial reactions:

1. food? there was food?

2. 27 adults and 15 kids and you guys did only a few boardgames? what did the rest do?

3. what happened to the new copy of that's life?

That's all the question for now, will write when i think up more.

Few things could've been made better :

- Gamemasters to teach games was a good idea, but gamelist was not given earlier for them to beef-up on the rules. Scary to throw them out in the open and expect them to know every games there are available.
- The theme was not clear : Was it a cafe with boardgames or boardgames with food served?
- If volunteers was needed; could have just asked on BGC and specify what was required of them.
- Idea was there but execution was not. But then its not easy to execute such things, especially when there are adults and kids needing different things.
- Throw away the PCs and Laptops next time, those things will attract kids like flies.

Thanks Ayheng.

1. Yes, There was food. A lot!

2. Not many came on time (7:30pm - 8pm).We expected that already.  Taking an hour to eat, leaving them only an hour (plus) to play. Also, they were catching up with one another. Shaking of hands was a plenty (making new friends, I think). Lucky Draw was at 10am. We do not want to hold them families longer than we should.

3. Not opened. :( oh well.., that's life. haha

My $0.02:

- the map is unclear, so finding exact location once we got to the block was a little challenging. The general location itself was ok for me as I pass by the place almost everyday.
- the PCs and laptops were good time-fillers before the gaming started, but should be switched off once the event was underway. You know how kids get bored & fidgety easily right.
- need to address the downtime for early arrivals. For e.g. when I got there at 8pm, saw gamemaster Wolf sitting there looking slightly bewildered. Aside from the fact that he's not used to the family crowd, guess he wasn't sure what game to demo.

But overall it was a good effort. You guys should've done a food sale after that. [:P]

- If volunteers was needed; could have just asked on BGC and specify what was required of them.
- Idea was there but execution was not. But then its not easy to execute such things, especially when there are adults and kids needing different things.
- Throw away the PCs and Laptops next time, those things will attract kids like flies.
Looks like there were certain areas we didnt take into consideration... Above all the theme is very important. You're darn right about the PCs...

Thanks
well done! despite the reported shortcomings, any event that can draw > 20 adults + kids deserves honorable mention! look forward to the next one.
Thanks Ed.

We were already thinking about the next one during the school holidays (March): Boardgame Camp. (For teens, perhaps?)

Not a far away place... mebbe some local school classroom block - with permission of course.

And oh, you think your band be ready by then?

Thanks aanemesis.

As for Wolf, while he was pressing for time, he mentioned that he didnt feel quite fit in with all those metalic decorations around him, after sensing that the crowd was mainly 'family-family' type. I told him not to worry - afterall, I want him to be himself! Guess I'll pop by his place and get some personal feedbacks.

Y'know... I think you're right about doing the food sales after all that.

Good report Shrapnel...and well done in introducing others to boardgaming.

A few questions, if I may:
1. I am still not sure about the objectives of the gathering. OK you have established that one of the objectives was to introduce more people to gaming. This was achieved. Were there other objectives.e.g. sales of games to these friends?

2. In your report, you said 'Some found the food was too pricey.' Er... did the people who turn up have to pay for the food?

3. Is this a prelude to starting a games cafe, since you mentioned 'sales' and 'food cost'?[:)]

1. the band will definitely be ready by then!

2. let me know when you plan to have your next do. i will be happy to sponsor prizes, door gifts, etc! like i said, anyone who can pull in >20 people to try games deserves to be supported!

3. just to clarify, who paid for the food? and do all attendees have to pay any cover?

keep up the good work!

We did a food sale-a la carte and set dinner. However we ordered too much and due to lack of helpers to serve the food, service was slow and a bit chaotic.

A particular young man did request for jazz to be played. With kids as young as 3 running around and 2 boys aged 5 and 6 who actually had a fist fight ,I doubt you can even hear a thing! Perhaps the next time, we'll invite kids age 7 upwards only.

Yes, by the way, our wonderful Game Masters Jeff,Wai Yan,Mr. Long & Wolf will each receive a RM10 Starbucks Voucher courtesy of Hobby Canteen  in appreciation of your kind effort. However , if you dont like coffee,I'll be happy to exchange it for a can of Redbull.hehehe)

Start practising your Jazz,Edwin....[+:o)]

bands are for loud, tuneless, rock music ;-) i assure you, after you hear our screaming vocals, the screaming kids will seem very much at home!

if you are going to get kids below 8, then you must borrow our maxi games - bamboleo, chicken cha cha cha and villa paletti. these will keep them busy.

alternatively, give them a few boxes of tomy train tracks (the blue plastic ones) and they'll be fixing tracks all night and watching their battery powered trains zoom by...

The introduction was the basic thing we want to achieve. That'll stir interests they never knew they had. We know the next question interested newbies will ask is "Where can I get one?" Clarification on Payment of food :

The sale of food was to cover all cost ,not a free party. That explains the 'pricey food' in an air conditioned place served on fine dinnerware.I'm sure you enjoyed the Love At First Bite with all that chocolate melting in your mouth, the flavourful Kampung Egg Tart, yummy scones, Winter Romance Pasta and Nasi Lemak that sends sweet memories lingering in your dreams. And how can you have forgotten our delicous Hot Macchiato or Relaxing Camomile Tea with Honey?

Agree to the Post Mortem:Distractions, lots of them eg. excited kids, computers, not enough helpers to guide/manage the crowd.Still we're glad we managed to introduce games to so many Newbies who  might join our OTK sessions soon. They're already asking for MOOORE! My Dentist FHM pal who brought her happening hubby and 2 young children certainly didnt regret staying back  till 10 cause I am sure I heard her laughter way behind in the kitchen as she played HEY ,THATS MY FISH with her hub and 2 other pals.Half way through,Ernest was so excited that he stood up while trying to work out his escape , threatening to overturn the table cause his penguin was trapped !

And the happening husband & wife team (Fiona & Shrek,..i mean Steven) whom we did Colloseum with at Mage actually turned up to our most pleasant surprise.Even kept to her promise of teaching us GLOOM ,to the delight of my 8 year old Sam ! Who later ' killed ' her mom in  Wolf and had the cheek to say "Its not me! I wont do this to my mom..." seemingly innocent expression.Too much of Peter Pan and High School Musical and she's a Drama Queen.[~]

Ah...thanks Shrapnel and c_mun for your clarification. Looks like I missed out on the good food[:(]

I agree that PCs and boardgames don't mix. One cannot have one with the other in a room and expect the participants-to-be (who are new to boardgames) to be interested in boardgames.

Anyway, well done again. Do take up on macedwin's offer of the giant versions of the games, they're really fun for kids.
