Just checked, AirAsia is flying to Gold Coast. Short-hop from there to Brisbane. Price is RM 758 1-way exc surcharges, taxes etc....

Interesting. I might have a project that'll swing over Brisbane and around that time (Jun-Aug) except i) we've not got the project officially, and ii) my July trip may not coincide with the GenCon date. But then again, let's keep fingers crossed. 
GenCon in Ozz is certainly more affordable than Essen. And if you are looking for gaming experience - ie play play play play play play - GenCon is a better one to drop in to.
Drat! Wrong timing. I've been planning a Gold Coast trip next Aug/Sep with the family. Now all I have to do is figure out how to swing 2 Ozzie trips in 1 year.
